Online Safety

Online Safety

At LSM we understand that the world of technology is evolving at a tremendous rate; our children are growing up in world which is changing on an almost daily basis. In today’s digital era, it’s imperative not only to provide our students with academic knowledge but also to equip them with the skills to navigate the online world responsibly

As a school, we understand that we cannot shy away from the world around us; technology has brought about many changes that are here to stay – influencing how people communicate and creating innovative job opportunities. That is why we are committed to empowering our pupils with the tools they need to take full advantage of this new digital landscape whilst also maintaining an awareness of potential hazards.

In embracing technology, we strive to create an environment where our students thrive in the digital age. We believe that by combining digital literacy with a proactive approach to online safety, we can prepare our students for success in the rapidly changing landscape of the modern world.

In an era where technology plays a pivotal role in education, socialising, and entertainment, we recognise the need for a proactive approach to online safety. At Leigh St Mary’s, we are dedicated to ensuring a secure digital environment for our students, empowering them to make informed decisions while using the internet.

It is our mission to ensure that our students not only harness the benefits of technological advancements but also develop a keen awareness of the potential challenges and risks associated with the digital world.

Digital platforms, social media, internet-connected devices, gaming, and digital gambling have become integral parts of our children’s lives. However, they also come with potential risks. Our school is actively engaged in addressing these dangers through our curriculum, educating students on responsible digital citizenship, and collaborating with parents to manage these risks effectively.

We understand the concerns parents may have about inappropriate or unsafe online content. Our school employs advanced filtering systems to monitor and prevent access to harmful sites, ensuring a safer online experience for your child. Additionally, we encourage open communication and partnership with parents to reinforce online safety practices at home.

Communication is key when it comes to online safety. We encourage parents to initiate open discussions with their children about their online activities. By understanding your child’s digital world, you can address concerns, answer questions, and guide them towards responsible online behaviour.

While the internet provides an invaluable resource for children’s learning and development, it can also pose potential dangers when navigated unsupervised. It’s essential to engage in open conversations with your children about their internet use.

One effective way to stay involved in your child’s online life is by joining them in their activities. Whether it’s exploring educational websites, playing games, or chatting on social media, being a part of their online world allows you to monitor their interactions and provide guidance when needed.

Our children are growing up surrounded by an array of digital distractions, each vying for their attention. From the allure of social media platforms and the immersive world of gaming to the potential risks of online gambling and the constant stream of messages on platforms like WhatsApp, their daily lives are a constant barrage of technological stimuli.

Excessive screen time, changes in behaviour, or signs of distress can indicate that your child might be facing challenges managing their time online. We have provided some useful links to support parents in recognising the warning signs.  The links below offer guidance on how to find a healthy balance between online and offline activities.  If you have concerns about the amount of time your child is spending online, or their gaming habits, then please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

At Leigh St Mary’s C of E Primary School, we believe that a collaborative effort between school and home is the key to ensuring the safety and well-being of our pupils online. Together, we can empower the next generation to use digital technology responsibly and confidently.
